One of the great glories of Riveredge is the 35 acres of mature prairie plantings, legacy of Andy Larsen, who served as director of Riveredge from soon after its founding in 1968 until 2001. Andy’s vision and work with volunteers transformed worn-out farmland into the spectacular prairie community of today. From pasque flowers in the spring to myriad summer blooming plants, to the gentian, goldenrod and asters of fall, prairies are a constantly changing place of wonder.
Explore and learn about these fascinating ecosystems with a full day of hands on learning sessions with the experts in prairie ecology. Sessions range from learning how to plant a prairie in your backyard to learning how to maintain an established prairie.
