Santa Claus will be arriving to sing along with the symphony and will be available after the concert for pictures with the children. Enjoy cookies and hot chocolate while you wait. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door (cash or card). Children and students tickets are free.
The concert is a fun mix of short Christmas themed works from across the centuries. You will hear old friends and new favorites. Three pieces from the concert are highlighted below. White Christmas is a favorite holiday song. It was written by Irving Berlin in 1942 for the musical film Holiday Inn. It won an academy award for best original song. Bing Crosby’s version is the most recognized version. In fact, it’s the world’s best-selling single. Mr. Berlin noted to his secretary that he wrote a song over the weekend and said, “Not only is it the best song I ever wrote, it’s the best song anybody ever wrote."
German Dance #3( Schlittenfahrt meaning Sleigh Ride), was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in February, 1791. Mozart was an enthusiastic dancer and produced many dance works. This piece is meant to mimic the sounds and experiences of a sleigh ride using sleigh bells and post horns (a valveless cylindrical brass horn with a cupped mouthpiece). This dance is part of three German dances, each varying in character.
After hearing an 18th century interpretation of a sleigh ride, we go to Irving Berlin's 20th century interpretation with the piece Sleigh Ride. Listen for how the experience of a sleigh ride has changed, and stayed the same over 200 years.
